What is Traditional Japanese Reiki?

In the West, Reiki is often taught simply as a complementary therapy — something you "do" to someone else on a massage table.
In the traditional Japanese system of Usui Reiki Ryoho, Reiki is foremost a spiritual practice for oneself. The word Reiki translates to spiritual energy, or our true essence. It is not something outside of us that we must channel; it is something that we are.

The Five Elements - The Foundation of Usui Reiki Ryoho

When you train with me, you will learn to work with all five of these elements. You will learn that before you can support another, you must first do the work yourself.
The Precepts (Gokai)
A daily moral compass to release anger and worry, and cultivate gratitude, honesty, and compassion.

Focused practices, such as breathing into the Hara (the energy centre below the navel), to ground ourselves and clear the mind.

1.The Personal Practice Journey
Shoden (Level 1) Workshop
Our mindfulness meditation classes will help you reduce stress, improve focus, and increase overall well-being. Our expert instructors will guide you through various meditation techniques to help you find inner peace.
Okuden (Level 2) Workshop
A 2-day in-person workshop taken 3 to 6 months after Shoden. Here you learn the three symbols and mantras, distance practice, and how to give a full treatment to others.

This pathway focuses entirely on the spiritual and energetic teachings of traditional Usui Reiki Ryoho. There are no case studies, no exams, and no business modules. You simply book the modules as you go.

2.The Professional Practitioner Diploma
If you want to work with the public, volunteer in hospices, receive referrals from the NHS, or build a trusted private practice, a weekend certificate is no longer enough.
Hospitals and clinical settings now require practitioners to be registered with the CNHC.
To get on that register, you need to have completed a verified course that meets National Occupational Standards. That is exactly what this diploma is.
This is a minimum 240-hour, 9-month journey. It includes everything in the Personal Practice Pathway, plus:
The Professional Module
Four taught sessions covering Anatomy and Physiology, UK Legislation, Health and Safety, and Business Setup.
Extensive Mentoring
15 hours of dedicated, live mentoring — including Case Study Clinics on Zoom where we troubleshoot challenges with your real clients — plus ongoing 1:1 email and WhatsApp support.
Clinical Practice
75 treatments, 10 formal case studies (4 sessions each), and 100 hours of receiving Reiki (logged).
Formal Assessment
4 treatments formally observed by the Course Provider, 1 treatment formally observed by an independent assessor, and the Reiki Council Questionnaire.
Assessment Framework
Formative Assessment
Continuous observation during in-person workshops, review of reflective journals, and Q&A sessions.
Summative Assessment
- Completion of 75 documented treatments (including 10 case studies of 4 sessions each)
- Completion of 100 hours of receiving Reiki (logged)
- 4 treatments formally observed by the Course Provider
- 1 treatment formally observed by an independent assessor

External Verification
Upon Completion:
To achieve full professional standing, graduates apply independently for Reiki Association verification. There is an external fee for this process, paid directly to the Reiki Association. Successful verification leads to fast-tracked CNHC registration and the right to display the Reiki Council Verified logo. Current fee information is available directly from the Reiki Association.
